Updated information: Woman has died following a wreck with a Freightliner in Devils Pocket

Newton County —
A two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 87, south of Trout Creek, has claimed the life of a 85-year-old woman. Her 90-year-old passenger was seriously injured in the accident.
The crash happened at around 3 p.m. Monday afternoon. According to the Department of Public Safety Media Sergeant Shana Clark, the driver of a 2023 Buick Enclave and the driver of a 2015 Freightliner Cascadia which was towing a 2019 utility trailer were both traveling north on 87. The driver of the Buick attempted to make a u-turn and pulled out in front of the Freightliner which struck the Buick on the drivers side.
The driver of the Buick is identified as 85-year-old Ann Burns from Orange. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Dana Ashmore.
Her passenger, identified as 90-year-old Charles Burns from Orange was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of possible life-threatening-injuries.
The driver of the Freightliner has been identified as 58-year-old Joseph Mwangi of Willis. Mwangi was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Trout Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Patrick's Wrecker Service, and Newton County Sheriff's Department assisted.
