Wildfire Education and Prevention provided by Texas A&M Forest Service

Updated: Jan 25

Texas A&M Forest Service

Currently, freeze-cured grasses can be found across the state. These grasses are not actively growing and are not replenishing or maintaining their moisture levels as they would when they are green. This also means they may be susceptible to ignition from any spark. Even after receiving rainfall, freeze-cured grasses will have very low moisture content, and will dry out very quickly.

Elevated fire weather will be present in the West Texas region today (Friday, Jan 24th). Do your part to prevent wildfires!

Stay vigilant with your outdoor activities, especially when operating equipment that can cause sparks such as welding, grinding, or mowing.

Avoid parking or driving over dry grass. The vehicle's catalytic converter can get hot enough to ignite dry grasses underneath.

Avoid any outdoor burning when it is dry and windy. Follow guidance from local officials.
