It’s shaping up to be a very wet weekend across the region as an area of low pressure moves through the south-central United States from Friday afternoon through Sunday, bringing widespread rain and thunderstorms.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, most areas across Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana — including Jasper, Newton, Tyler, Hardin, and surrounding counties — can expect 2 to 4 inches of rainfall, with some locations possibly seeing as much as 6 inches by Sunday night.
Meteorologists say a warm, tropical air mass ahead of the system will produce slow-moving showers and storms capable of heavy rainfall. While this rain is expected to put a significant dent in the region’s ongoing drought, it may also lead to nuisance street flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.
Forecast Highlights:
Rainfall Totals: 2–4 inches common, up to 6 inches in isolated areas
Highest Probabilities: 70–95% chance of rainfall exceeding 2 inches
Localized Flooding: Possible, especially in urban and low drainage areas
Timing: Friday evening through Sunday night
Areas around Woodville, Jasper, Buna, Beaumont, and Orange are projected to receive 3–4 inches, while parts of central Louisiana could see slightly lower totals.
Despite the potential for heavy rain, the NWS says the system could be a welcome relief for drought-stricken areas that have gone weeks without meaningful precipitation.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates through the weekend and use caution on roadways, especially during periods of heavy rain.
