A Burkeville man wanted in connection with a burglary investigation has surrendered to authorities, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

On December 30, 2025, deputies began investigating a burglary of a habitation on County Road 2084 in Burkeville. The victim in the case provided deputies with surveillance footage of the break-in, which allowed investigators to identify the suspect as Ryan Calvin Smith.

The Sheriff’s Office made multiple attempts to locate Smith following the identification but was initially unsuccessful.

On January 14, 2026, Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard made contact with Smith by phone and arranged for him to surrender. At approximately 5:00 p.m., Smith turned himself in at the Newton County Jail.

Smith is currently being held in the Newton County Jail on a charge of Burglary of a Habitation – Felony 2.

The investigation remains ongoing.
