DIXIE COMMUNITY — Out with the old, in with the new. The Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department recently expanded its main station by adding two new apparatus bays, bringing the total to five. The expansion comes as the department continues to grow busier than ever — and with more equipment to house than originally expected.
Fire Chief James Gunter explained that the original lightweight roll-up doors, purchased in 2018, began to fail after years of heavy use. Springs wore out, rubber guide strips came loose, and the thin steel panels weren’t holding up to the daily demands.
With the expansion, the department opted to replace all five doors at once. The new models are a sturdier build, 2 inches thick with an insulation rating of R-10, reinforced fiberglass panels, and windows to allow natural light inside. They were purchased locally through Overhead Door Company of Jasper.
Funding for the project came through Jasper County Emergency Services District #4, with support from the community. The original roll-up doors won’t go to waste — they’ll be repurposed as rear bay doors at both the Beech Grove and Dixie substations, where they’ll see lighter use.
“Not only did we never expect to be this busy, we also never thought we’d have this much equipment,” Gunter said. “Thanks to the community for helping us get here.”
