Southeast Texas residents, be on guard — scammers are once again posing as government agencies in an attempt to steal personal and financial information.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has flagged a text-message scam circulating in our area that claims to come from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. The messages threaten enforcement actions or license suspensions if supposed unpaid violations aren’t paid immediately. They include suspicious links and fake payment portals to harvest personal data.
Officials remind the public to never click on links from unknown senders, and always verify messages directly with the legitimate agency. TxDOT stressed to pay close attention to suspicious email addresses, web addresses, and grammatical errors — all common red flags for scams.
“If something feels off, it probably is,” TxDOT warns.
Residents are encouraged to share this information with family and neighbors to help protect against fraud. Anyone who suspects they have received a fraudulent message should report it to local law enforcement or file a complaint at www.texasattorneygeneral.gov.
