Two Injured in Newton County Crash at Hwy 87 and FM 1004


NEWTON COUNTY, Texas – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a two-vehicle crash that sent two people to the hospital Wednesday afternoon in Trout Creek.


According to DPS, the crash happened around 2:33 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, at the intersection of State Highway 87 and Farm-to-Market Road 1004. A 2020 Hyundai Elantra was traveling east on FM 1004 when the driver reportedly disregarded the stop sign at the intersection and was struck by a northbound 1998 Chevrolet S10.


The driver of the Hyundai, 23-year-old Shayla Hutchison of Jasper, was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An adult passenger in her vehicle was not injured.


The driver of the Chevrolet, 49-year-old Carol McMahon of Kirbyville, was also taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.


Troopers said the crash remains under investigation.
