The Sabine River Authorities of Texas and Louisiana have issued a public notice after Wednesday morning readings showed Toledo Bend Reservoir water levels nearing the spillway threshold.
At 7:45 a.m., the reservoir elevation was recorded at 172.20 feet MSL, just below the 172.50-foot benchmark that would prompt the opening of spillway gates. Both hydroelectric generators are currently operating 24 hours a day to manage water levels.
Officials warn that Toledo Bend is not a flood control reservoir, meaning it can experience rapid elevation increases during periods of heavy rainfall. With ongoing storms across the region, continued monitoring of inflow conditions is underway. If the reservoir continues to rise, controlled releases through the spillway gates may become necessary.
"We urge residents in the Sabine River Basin to stay alert and monitor official updates," stated representatives from both the Texas and Louisiana Sabine River Authorities. "Flood-stage conditions are possible, and evacuation of persons, animals, and property may be required with limited notice."
To stay safe and informed, the public is encouraged to track real-time river and reservoir levels and weather forecasts from the following resources:
Flood conditions can develop quickly and may differ from early alerts based on shifting weather patterns. Residents living near the Sabine River should review their emergency preparedness plans and remain weather-aware throughout the week.
The East Texas Banner will continue providing the latest information as conditions develop.
