Each year the Texas A&M Forest Service's Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program (RVDFA) provides grants to eligible volunteer fire departments in Texas. This year, three local departments are recipients of the grants.

The Kirbyville Volunteer Fire Department has received $10,000 for training aids, while the Pinehurst Fire Department and the Trout Creek Volunteer Fire Department each have received $25,000 for personal protective equipment.

Kirbyville Volunteer Fire Chief Greg Ellis said, "The department received a grant from the Texas A&M Forest Service for $10,000.00 to purchase training items. The fire department plans to buy at least one new computer along with training videos, new television, and a training dummy that we use to simulate dragging someone out of a burning building or home."

The program's goal is to enhance the emergency response capabilities of volunteer fire departments, helping them obtain equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources.

Ellis added, "These items and this money will be used to support our community and surrounding area."

These grants are part of a larger $2.1 million awarded statewide to 94 volunteer fire departments.
