JASPER, Texas — The Texas Jail Commission arrived at the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning to begin the department’s annual jail inspection, a comprehensive review required by state law.
According to Sheriff Chuck Havard, the inspection covers every aspect of jail operations — from record-keeping and inmate care to facility maintenance, policies, and compliance with state standards.
“We’ve been preparing for this inspection since I took office,” Havard said. “The operation of the Jasper County Jail is one of my primary responsibilities as Sheriff, and this review is critical for our office and the taxpayers of our county.”
Since taking office on January 1, 2025, Havard and his team have undertaken a major improvement effort to modernize and restore the facility, both inside and out. Much of the jail has received a fresh coat of paint, repairs, and general upgrades, with only a few finishing touches — such as painting floors and select cell interiors — still underway.
“Our facility is clean, efficient, and well-maintained,” Havard added. “That’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our jail staff and trustees.”
Havard extended special thanks to Jail Administrator Kenny Widner, Captain Joe Pomponio, and the entire correctional staff for their preparation ahead of the inspection.
The Sheriff said he remains confident that Jasper County Jail will meet or exceed compliance requirements set forth by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, and he plans to update citizens on the final report results once the inspection is complete.
“We look forward to working with the Jail Commission,” Havard said. “I’m confident we’ll be in full compliance with both state law and Commission rules.”
