NEWTON COUNTY, Texas — A Deweyville man was arrested Monday morning after a stolen trailer was recovered during an investigation into a suspicious person call, according to Newton County Sheriff Colton Havard.
Sheriff Havard stated that on Monday, January 19, 2026, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Sergeant Cagle was dispatched to the 3000 block of State Highway 12 in Deweyville in reference to a suspicious person.
Upon arrival, Sergeant Cagle made contact with Tony James Miller, who was found to be highly intoxicated from an unknown substance. During the investigation, Sergeant Cagle located Miller’s vehicle along with a Big Tex trailer loaded with pipe parked nearby.

A records check of the trailer revealed it had been previously reported stolen out of Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana. Further investigation determined the trailer had been stolen from a construction company where Miller was formerly employed, according to Sheriff Havard.
Miller was taken into custody and transported to the Newton County Jail, where he was charged with Theft of Property greater than $2,500 but less than $30,000, a state jail felony.
As with all criminal cases, Miller is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Sheriff Havard stated that the Newton County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to investigating criminal activity and protecting property owners throughout the county.
