JASPER, Texas – The State Association of Fire and Emergency Districts (SAFE-D) Southeast Texas Team held its second regional meeting on Friday, August 29, at the Jasper County Emergency Operations Center.
The session brought together leadership from across Southeast Texas, with SAFE-D President Billy Ted Smith of Jasper County ESD #1, Vice President Gary Dennis of Henderson County ESD #6, Board Director Doug Saunders of Jefferson County ESD #3, and Southeast Texas Regional Chair Scott McDonald of Orange County ESD #3 in attendance. Jasper County Judge Mark Allen also participated, alongside representatives from Emergency Services Districts in Jasper, Newton, Orange, Jefferson, Hardin, and Tyler counties.
The meeting focused on SAFE-D’s accomplishments over the past year, legislative and operational priorities, and the unique challenges facing rural fire and emergency services. Leaders emphasized the importance of specialized training and regional collaboration to ensure first responders have the tools and support they need.
“This kind of cooperation is what strengthens our communities,” one official noted, pointing to the role ESDs play in keeping residents safe during emergencies.
SAFE-D reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for first responders, building stronger partnerships across county lines, and making sure rural districts are not left behind when it comes to training, funding, and equipment.
