Details are only now coming in, but we have learned that a Jasper Police Officer was involved in a shooting early this morning.

Jasper Police Department has issued a statement regarding an officer-involved shooting that occurred early this morning at approximately 5:00 a.m. just south of U.S. Highway 190 less than a mile from the intersection of U.S. Highway 96 and U.S. Highway 190.

During the incident, a Jasper Police Officer was shot. Fortunately, the Officer was wearing a ballistic vest, which appears to have prevented the bullet from penetrating. The Officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is currently in stable condition.

The suspect involved in this incident is deceased. He has been identified as 67-year-old Elvin Dean Land of Jasper.

When these incidents occur, it is standard procedure for the Texas Department of Public Safety Ranger Division, to conduct its own separate investigation followed by an internal review of the Jasper Police Department. Those investigations are currently underway, and no further information will be released at this time.

We ask the community to keep the injured Officer and the deceased family and friends in their thoughts and prayers during this time.

We will update our readers as more information becomes available.
