Sybil Howard Mitchell, 89, of Woodville, Texas, passed away Friday, January 9, 2026 at Dogwood Trails Manor in Woodville.
Visitation will begin 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. service time on Monday, January 12, 2026 at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Shady Grove Cemetery, all in Woodville. Officiating will be Brother Mark Tolar and Brother Noah Jackson. Serving as pallbearers will be Howard Cook, Ricky Heady, Lance Hopson, Eldon Vorse, Nicole Putzier, and Michael Weida.
Sybil was born March 4, 1936 to LB and Lela Mae Hodges Howard in Port Arthur, Texas. She was raised in Tyler County from the age of 9 and graduated from Kirby High School in 1954. She obtained a Registration Designation as a Medical Records Administrator and was a supervisor of medical records departments in several hospitals in Houston and Pasadena, Texas for 50 years. After retirement, she moved back to Tyler County in 1995 when she and Sherman married, and they lived a content and happy life. She enjoyed reading, gardening, but most of all she loved the Lord and her family. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodville.
She was preceded in death by her father, LB Howard; mother, Lela Mae Howard Morris; husband of 29 years, Sherman Mitchell; son, Curtis B. Howard; brother Kenneth Howard; sisters, Maggie Johnson and Faye Beth Purifoy; brothers-in-law John E. Berry, Darrell Teal, Eddie Purifoy, Daniel Johnson, Edgar Mitchell, and Oliver Mitchell; sisters-in-law Edna Lee, Louise Mitchell, J.C. Connell and Judy Mitchell.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Ewing of Joseph City, Arizona; sisters, Roberta Teal of Orange, Texas and Deanie Berry of Carthage, Texas; sister-in-law, Sandra Mitchell of Woodville; bonus children, Linda Vorse and husband, Eldon of Willis, Texas, Wayne Mitchell and wife, Annette of Benton, Arkansas and Amber Cook and husband, Sidney of Pasadena, Texas; grandchildren, Nicole Putzier, Lance Hopson, Alisha and Kevin Finley, Brandon and Brandi Vorse, Jared and Tamara Mitchell, Jennifer Mitchell Favier, Bryan Bostick, Amarice Vasques, Maddison Cortez, and Christopher Wood; great-grandchildren Liam Hood, Katlyn Finley, Andrew Finley, Brody Vorse, Brooks Vorse, Tessa Mitchell, Toby Mitchell, Halle Favier, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. At the time of her death, Sybil was the eldest of her family both paternal and maternal!
Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home in Woodville, Texas.
