David passed away peacefully on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Christus Mother Francis Hospital in Jacksonville, Texas with family by his side.
David was a native of Lufkin, Texas and a lifelong resident of Jasper. He graduated from Jasper High School in 1984 and went on to further his education at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas where he graduated in 1990 with a B.A. in Education and later received his Masters Degree in Education. He recently retired after 33 years.
David perfectly summed up his career as an educator, coach and administrator in his own words in a recent message announcing his retirement.
“Well for those of you who do not already know I am Officially retired. Actually as of April 1 2025. I dedicated 33 years to the education system of Texas. I was the product of two life long educators and I produced an educator. Together the four of us served 119 years to the public education system of Texas, 105 of those years to Jasper ISD. I was a Teacher/Coach for 23 years and then moved in to administration. As much as I loved coaching I really felt the calling when I moved into administration. I worked for five amazing school districts: Brady ISD, Sheldon ISD, Jasper ISD, Brookeland ISD, and Alto ISD." To the thousands of students and student athletes I crossed paths with please know that whether I showed it or told you,I loved you all. To the hundreds fellow educators I worked with, you all had an impact on my life both personally and professionally. For those of you who got to work with the final product of me as Principal of Jasper Jr. High, I want you to know that those were the best years of my career. I know that I didn't always make everyone happy or make the decisions that you may have wanted. But please know that I always did what I thought was right for the students. Now to quote that great American philosopher Jimmy Buffet, "Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I have had a good life all along the way"
He then moved to the family farm in Alto, Texas where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, barbequing, cooking and mowing. But most of all he loved spending time with his family and his beloved daughter Ayden Rose Burt.
David is survived by his parents, Billy and Sammie Burt and his childhood friend, Scott Stover and wife Susan.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ayden Rose Burt.
Memorials may be made to the Ayden Rose Burt Foundation, 971 Hunterwood Drive, Jasper, Texas 75951.
Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Jasper.
