Man Arrested in Beech Grove for Narcotics Possession and Unlawfully Carrying Weapons

On the morning of Thursday, July 10, 2025, at approximately 9:44 a.m., Chief Deputy Larry Pulliam received a call from a concerned citizen in the Beech Grove community. The caller reported suspicious activity involving several individuals who appeared to be attempting theft on oilfield property located off FM 1747.


Sheriff Chuck Havard, along with Chief Deputy Pulliam and additional deputies, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, law enforcement observed a red Toyota pickup truck attempting to leave the property. Deputies quickly moved in and detained the driver along with two juvenile passengers.


The driver, later identified as Joshua J. Smith, 38, of Daisetta, Texas, was found to be in possession of a controlled substance as well as multiple handguns. Smith was arrested and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance and Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail.



The two juveniles were released at the scene with no charges filed. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine whether a theft occurred.


Mr. Smith is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.


Sheriff Havard expressed his gratitude to the vigilant citizen who reported the incident, stating, “We appreciate the residents of Jasper County who remain observant and contact us when something doesn’t seem right. Our team is committed to addressing criminal activity and keeping our communities safe.”
