DEWEYVILLE, Texas — A Louisiana man is facing drug charges after a routine traffic stop in Deweyville led to the discovery of suspected methamphetamine, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
On Thursday, September 18, 2025, at approximately 6:59 p.m., Deputy Brent Sonnier conducted a traffic stop on a 2003 Ford Explorer near the intersection of County Road 4181 and State Highway 12 for expired registration.
During the stop, Deputy Sonnier reported observing indicators of possible criminal activity and asked the driver, identified as 35-year-old Scott Jared Statum, to exit the vehicle. As Statum complied, he allegedly dropped two plastic baggies containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine.
Statum was immediately arrested and transported to the Newton County Jail. The suspected methamphetamine weighed 6.13 grams, according to preliminary field testing.
Sheriff Colton Havard stated that the Sheriff’s Office remains committed to fighting the war on drugs in communities across Newton County.
