Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard reports that a routine livestock call in Buna led deputies to two unrelated felony drug arrests on Wednesday morning.

On November 26, 2025, just after 8:30 a.m., Sheriff Havard received a call from a resident on FM 2938 (Callier Loop) regarding loose cattle. The caller advised that the cattle belonged to the resident at 2803 FM 2938. Sheriff Havard and Deputy Clayton Daigle responded to the location, where they spoke with the individual about the livestock issue.

Sheriff Havard noted that the property has been the subject of previous information regarding possible criminal activity. After addressing the livestock complaint, deputies informed the resident that they believed the house and property may be connected to drug activity and requested consent to search. The individual was advised that consent was voluntary and not required — but he granted it willingly.

During the search of the residence, deputies located a clear, off-white substance believed to be methamphetamine, along with additional drug paraphernalia. The items were seized.

Deputies then walked across an adjoining pasture to 2725 FM 2938, where they also obtained consent to search the second residence. Inside, they again located a clear, off-white substance believed to be methamphetamine. In both cases, the substances were field-tested and returned positive results for methamphetamine.

Lieutenant Jason McClelland responded to the scene to assist with evidence processing and photography.

Both individuals were taken into custody.

  • Brian Kent Mason, 55, of Buna — arrested at 2803 FM 2938

  • Marcell Eugene Mason Jr., 64, of Buna — arrested at 2725 FM 2938

Both men were transported to the Jasper County Jail and charged with Felony Possession of a Controlled Substance. Sheriff Havard notes that all individuals are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Sheriff Havard added:

“Myself and our deputies are 150% committed to doing everything we can to rid our community of methamphetamines and other drugs. If you're in a suspected drug house in our county, don’t be surprised if me or our deputies show up to visit with you. I want to thank our deputies for the job they are doing and their unwavering commitment to protect the people of our county.”
