KIRBYVILLE, TX-

The City of Kirbyville held their Regular City Council Meeting on Tuesday, July 15th. The meeting began at 5:00 pm, and all members were present.

Mayor Frank George called the meeting to order. Councilwoman Amanda Gates gave the invocation , and Councilwoman Vondol Bailey led the Pledge.

Members then gave welcoming statements and comments regarding the community. Mayor George mentioned that the Elizabeth St. water tower project is scheduled to begin within the next few days. Also, George stated that the Waste Water Plant remodeling project is currently underway. Councilwoman Laura Adams noted that the City workers have really made some positive changes in Kirbyville. Bailey said that she was very proud of the 4th of July Celebration, and thanked the City workers for their help preparing for the event. Councilman Frank Erimias mentioned that he recently spoke to people who have visited Kirbyville, and they have all said the same thing, "The people of Kirbyville are some of the friendliest people around!" Gates said that the parks look great. She thanked the Parks Department for all their hard work.

Bailey mentioned that the Police Department wrote a number of tickets on the 4th of July weekend. She said, "People are using Kirbyville as a fairway to get to the lakes. George added, "(The police) are not hiding either. They are right there in the open and people still fly through. We even had TxDot put up a new 4ft by 4ft 35 mph sign, and they still didn't see it!"

The Council then approved the Consent Agenda from last month's meeting.

Next, James Guest with Linebarger Law Firm spoke regarding their proposal to receive the City's tax account. Then, Patrick McArthur with Purdue Law Firm spoke to the council regarding their services. George said, "I just can't see changing for the sake of changing. That would be my recommendation, to stick with Purdue." The Council voted to stay with Purdue for the City's tax collection needs.

Jamie Odom of Kirbyville Light and Power spoke regarding the warehouse in which the City's equipment is stored. "There's a whole lot of 'money' in that shack. The roof is leaking and rain runs down the walls, plus the windows are busted. Some of them were covered up, but they need to all be covered. I got someone to get on the roof and check it out and we found out that it was covered in untreated lumber." George added, "The bid is around $33,000. And we need to get it on this as quick as we can. We won't get the work done until around August or September." The bid will cover the roof and windows. The project was approved.

Mayor George then closed the meeting.
