Jasper Police Arrest Man After Shots Fired Call

Update: Sunday 2:42 p.m. Jasper Police Chief Garrett Foster released additional details regarding the use of a Taser during Saturday’s arrest. Foster stated the individual repeatedly refused lawful commands to place his hands behind his back. The first Taser deployment was ineffective, making contact only with clothing, while the second was effective and allowed officers to safely gain control. Foster added that because there was a possibility the suspect was still armed and within reach of firearms inside the doorway, the officers’ actions were necessary to protect themselves, the public, and the individual involved.

JASPER, Texas – A Saturday afternoon “shots fired” call led to the arrest of a Jasper man, according to a press release issued Sunday afternoon by Police Chief Garrett Foster.

Chief Foster stated that at approximately 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 16, officers responded to the 500 block of Jackson Road after receiving reports of gunfire.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with Marques Teshun Johnson, 36, of Jasper, who police say had a handgun in his pocket and appeared intoxicated. According to the release, Johnson ignored repeated commands and attempted to retreat into his residence, where officers knew multiple firearms were kept.

Johnson was taken into custody at approximately 4:50 p.m. by the Jasper Police Department.

According to booking records, Johnson faces the following charges:

• Assault on a Peace Officer/Judge

• Resisting Arrest, Search, or Transport with a Deadly Weapon

• Evading Arrest/Detention

Johnson’s bond information had not yet been released as of Sunday afternoon.
