At around 7 pm on Thursday, a Department of Public Safety Trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on south Bowie Street, near U.S. Highway 190 in Jasper.

According to the report, instead of stopping, the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Walter Ray Garrett Jr of Jasper began to flee on a black electric bike. Before long he jumped off and fled on foot. As he was running, Garrett dumped a backpack and fell to the ground not long thereafter. Garrett then stood up and the Trooper commanded him to get back on the ground so he could be detained. Garrett refused to follow instructions and began to walk towards the Trooper with his fists balled up. The Trooper again commanded the suspect to get on the ground but he still refused, forcing the Trooper to use his taser. At that time the suspect was able to be detained.

Upon searching the backpack and bags on the electric bike, the Trooper discovered marijuana, suspected synthetic marijuana otherwise known as K2, small plastic baggies containing suspected ecstasy pills, and another small baggy of suspected methamphetamines.

Garrett was charged with evading arrest on foot, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest, all misdemeanor offenses, manufacturing or delivery of a controlled substance in penalty group 1, possession of controlled substance in penalty group 2, and tampering or fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair and evading arrest in a motor vehicle, which are all felony offenses. Garrett was placed under arrest and transported to the Jasper County Jail.

Garrett's Bond has been set at $280,000. At last word, he remains in Jasper County Jail.
