JASPER, Texas — Jasper County officially welcomed Maegan Pope as its newest County Auditor during a swearing-in ceremony held the morning of January 1, 2026.

The ceremony was opened by Delinda Gibbs-Walker, who welcomed attendees before the invocation was delivered. Judge Gibbs-Walker then administered the oath of office to Pope, with her husband, Heath Pope, holding the Bible as she was sworn in.

County officials, staff, and community members gathered to show their support as Pope officially joined Jasper County’s team of professionals. The ceremony also recognized the service of outgoing County Auditor Mellissa Smith, who will transition into a new role as a deputy in the County Clerk’s Office. Smith attended the ceremony alongside members of the Auditor’s Office to support Pope and assist with a smooth and seamless transition.

In a statement following the event, Mark Allen, County Judge for Jasper County, thanked those in attendance and extended appreciation to Smith for her service, while welcoming Pope into her new role.

County leadership also shared well wishes for residents across Jasper County and Southeast Texas, expressing hopes for a healthy and prosperous New Year in 2026.

Pope begins her tenure as County Auditor at the start of the new year, stepping into a role vital to the county’s financial oversight and accountability.
