JASPER COUNTY — Jasper County taxpayers are being given a short but important extension on the 2025 property tax payment deadline due to a weekend office closure, according to an official notice from Jasper County Tax Assessor-Collector Joe Hawthorn.
Under newly enacted state law, property tax payments will not be considered delinquent on January 31 this year because that date falls on a Saturday and county tax offices will be closed.
As a result, payments will be considered timely if received by Monday, February 2, 2026, with additional grace for certain payment methods.
According to Hawthorn, the extension applies to:
Mailed payments postmarked on or before February 2, 2026
Payments placed in the tax office drop box before February 3, 2026
In-person or online payments made before February 3, 2026
The change stems from House Bill 1392, passed by the 89th Texas Legislature, which updates how delinquency dates are handled when a tax office is closed on the statutory deadline.
Previously, extensions were limited primarily to weekends and holidays. The new law expands that protection to include any closure of a tax collector’s office, including weekends, holidays, or other circumstances such as severe weather.
Why it matters
The law is designed to prevent taxpayers from being penalized simply because they could not physically access the tax office on the official deadline.
“This provides taxpayer relief and fairness,” the notice explains, ensuring residents are not hit with penalties or interest due to circumstances beyond their control.
Effective date
The new law takes effect January 1, 2026, making this the first tax year it applies in Jasper County.
Taxpayers are still encouraged not to wait until the last minute and to confirm payment methods and processing times to avoid any issues.
The full notice from the Jasper County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office is dated January 14, 2026.
