JASPER — Long before most folks had their morning coffee, Jasper County Jail trustees were already putting in the work — this time lending a hand at the Jasper County Senior Center on North Fletcher Street.

Under the supervision of Jail Administrator Kenny Widner and Captain Joe Pomponio, trustees helped move a Coke machine for the center, part of their ongoing service work that often goes unseen but makes a big difference in the community.
“Most people in our county aren’t aware of how much work our jail trustees do,” said Sheriff Chuck Havard. “They save taxpayers a ton of money and it gives them a chance to do something positive with their life.”
To be selected as a trustee, inmates must demonstrate consistent politeness, courtesy, respect, and a strong work ethic, Havard said. These individuals assist with maintenance, cleanup, and other public projects across Jasper County — efforts that contribute to the community while helping inmates build responsibility and purpose.

The Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to Widner and Pomponio for their oversight of the trustee program and praised the men participating for their dedication.
“Programs like this prove that good work and good people can come from anywhere — even behind the walls of a county jail,” Havard added.
