Smoky pits, warm smiles, and heartfelt community support as Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department fired up its annual July 4th BBQ fundraiser in Magnolia Springs.

Held at the department’s station on FM 1005, the event once again served as both a beloved community gathering and a vital source of support for the volunteer firefighters who protect the area year-round. Volunteers worked side by side plating up generous helpings of brisket, ribs, chicken, and sausage, served with traditional potato salad, beans, a drink, and dessert.

“This fundraiser has been a tradition since the late ’80s,” said Paul Rutledge, Public Information Officer and volunteer firefighter with Tri-Community VFD. “It brings families together around the Fourth of July and gives them a chance to support the department at the same time.”

And show up they did — from longtime supporters to first-timers, residents came ready to lend a hand and enjoy a good meal. Plates quickly went out the door, with choices ranging from one-meat to four-meat combos, while a steady line of guests kept volunteers busy well into the afternoon.

Beyond the barbecue, guests had the chance to purchase Tri-Community VFD shirts and hats to show their support long after the event ended. LifeShare Blood Center was also on-site, welcoming donors throughout the day to help bolster the community’s critical summer blood supply.

The impact of this event goes far beyond a good meal. Past proceeds have funded essential equipment — including the department’s Rescue 891 med truck, a fully stocked medical unit used to stabilize patients before ambulances arrive. Originally, the annual BBQ helped fund a set of “jaws of life” for vehicle extractions. Over time, the fundraiser has continued to fill gaps that tax dollars can’t always cover.

“It’s a way for us to give back and still meet some of those smaller but important needs in the department,” Rutledge added.

Attendees mingled and caught up with neighbors while enjoying the home-cooked feast, and many left with a renewed sense of pride in their volunteer firefighters — a team that remains ready to serve no matter the call.

While final fundraising totals weren’t immediately available, organizers said every bit raised goes right back into keeping the Tri-Community VFD equipped, trained, and ready for the next emergency.

In a message shared after the event, the department extended their gratitude:

“To everyone who came out today — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your love, support, and generosity absolutely blew us away. We thought we were ready… we prepared more than last year, hoping to serve everyone who showed up — but you showed up in full force, and we still sold out before noon! This kind of turnout is more than just a success — it’s a reminder of how powerful and connected our community truly is. Whether you bought a plate, made a donation, or simply showed up with a smile, you made today what it was. We are so deeply grateful for each and every one of you. Thank you for believing in us, standing with us, and making today something truly special.”
