Governor Abbott Appoints John E. Burt as Jasper County Criminal District Attorney

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed John E. Burt as the Jasper County Criminal District Attorney, according to an announcement released Wednesday. Burt’s term will run through December 31, 2026.
Burt, of Buna, currently serves as the First Assistant Criminal District Attorney for Jasper County. His appointment places him at the helm of the county’s chief prosecutorial office, overseeing felony prosecutions and representing the state in criminal matters.
Before joining the Jasper County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, Burt served as an assistant criminal district attorney in Newton County and practiced law privately. He also brings extensive experience in education administration, having served as both assistant superintendent and superintendent of Buna Independent School District. Burt is a former president of the Buna ISD School Board.
Burt is a member of the Texas District and County Attorneys’ Association. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and a Master of Education in Administration from Lamar University, as well as a Juris Doctor degree from South Texas College of Law.
The appointment fills the Jasper County Criminal District Attorney position through the end of 2026, when the seat will again be subject to election.
