JASPER COUNTY, Texas — A 21-year-old Buna man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after attempting to evade Jasper County deputies during a patrol in the Call area.
According to Jasper County Sheriff Chuck Havard, on January 20, 2026, at approximately 1 p.m., Deputies Harrell and Gray were on patrol in the 2600 block of U.S. Highway 96 near Call when Deputy Harrell observed Briar Brister, 21, standing in a driveway.
Deputy Harrell recognized Brister as a fugitive from justice, and as deputies attempted to make contact, Brister fled into a wooded area nearby. Deputies entered the woods, calling out to Brister by name while announcing themselves.
Sheriff Havard stated that Brister later ran back out of the woods, continuing to evade deputies on foot and attempting to enter a truck that was leaving the property. Deputies Harrell and Gray were able to take Brister into custody without further incident.
Brister was transported to the Jasper County Jail, where he was booked on two warrants:
Motion to Revoke Probation – Theft of a Firearm (State Jail Felony)
Motion to Revoke Probation – Possession of a Controlled Substance (State Jail Felony)
In addition, Brister was charged with Evading Arrest or Detention, a Class A misdemeanor.
Sheriff Havard stated that he and his staff remain committed to combating criminal activity and maintaining public safety throughout Jasper County.
As with all cases, Brister is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
