Jasper Fire Department spent Saturday teaching fire fighters about Lithium Ion Battery safety. The class was given by TEEX Extension Services and taught by Stephen Ewing. TEEX stands for Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, a state extension agency within the Texas A&M University System that provides training, technical assistance, and emergency response services.

Brent Scoggins with Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department said, "Electric vehicles in Texas have exceeded 200,000 We will encounter them more often. When burning, these batteries release highly toxic heavy metals. Responder and environmental safety is paramount in these instances."
Scoggins added that the students represent Angelina River, Beech Grove, East End, Ivanhoe, Jasper, Lake Rayburn, Tri-Community, and Warren Fire Departments. They give their time freely to continue to better protect the ones they serve, themselves and their families.
