Fatal Shooting Under Investigation in Newton

NEWTON, TX — A fatal shooting early Sunday morning in the City of Newton is under investigation, according to Newton Police Chief Will Jackson.


Chief Jackson said officers were called to a location commonly known as “The Hill” on the north side of town after a dispute at a party reportedly escalated into gunfire.


One woman, who was reported to be from DeRidder, Louisiana, was transported by ambulance to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.


In addition to the fatality, three other individuals were wounded in the incident and taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment. One of the injured victims was later airlifted by medical helicopter to a Houston hospital for additional medical care.


Chief Jackson stated that the circumstances surrounding what sparked the shooting and the identity of the shooter remain under investigation. No arrests have been announced at this time.


Sheriff Colton Havard with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies assisted at the scene and said his office is willing to assist the City of Newton in any way possible as the investigation continues, noting that the case is being handled by city authorities.
