Fast-Spreading Brush Fire Puts Homes at Risk Near County Road 29

JASPER COUNTY, TX — A fast-moving brush fire near County Road 29 off Highway 255 prompted a large multi-agency response shortly before 5 p.m., threatening homes and outbuildings in the area.

The Lake Rayburn Volunteer Fire Department was requested to assist Angelina River Volunteer Fire Department as flames spread rapidly through pine saplings and wooded terrain.

According to the Texas A&M Forest Service, approximately 8.64 acres burned before the fire was brought under control.

Lake Rayburn responded with six firefighters and three apparatus. Crews staged at multiple residences to provide structure protection while one unit worked directly along the active fire line, successfully stopping the fire’s spread on one flank.

Officials reported that one outbuilding had burned prior to firefighters’ arrival. However, crews were able to save four residential structures and multiple additional outbuildings.

The Texas A&M Forest Service established containment lines around the perimeter to prevent further spread.

Lake Rayburn VFD also deployed a drone to enhance situational awareness, allowing crews to monitor fire progression and identify hotspots from above.

At this time, the fire is under control. No injuries have been reported.

Fire officials expressed appreciation for the coordinated response and teamwork among neighboring departments in protecting homes, property, and surrounding timberland.

Residents are urged to use caution with outdoor burning during dry conditions, as fires can spread quickly in wooded areas.
