JASPER COUNTY, Texas — Martin Dies Jr. State Park is embracing autumn with a full calendar of family-friendly programs, guided talks, and outdoor adventures throughout October — though one longtime favorite will be taking a break this year.
Park officials confirmed that the annual Trunk or Treat event will not be held due to construction in the 100 and 200 camping loops. “Those areas are temporarily closed for improvements, but the rest of the park remains open and active,” staff said.
Visitors can still enjoy a packed lineup of educational and nature programs at the Park Amphitheater in the Walnut Ridge Unit, including:
Armadillo Talk: Learn about Texas’s most armored resident and its unique behaviors.
Alligator Talk: Discover the ancient history and survival secrets of these prehistoric reptiles.
Forest Trail Hike: Explore the trees of East Texas and how to identify them along scenic park trails.
Pelts and Tracks: Get hands-on with real animal fur and learn to recognize wildlife footprints.
Campfire Safety: Understand the do’s and don’ts of building, maintaining, and extinguishing a campfire safely.
Other highlights this month include homeschool programs, morning hikes, and themed activities for all ages. The park’s Education Center will be open most Thursdays through Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., offering visitors an up-close look at local flora and fauna.
