A Sulphur Springs man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to violently assaulting a woman last year, according to the Wood County District Attorney’s Office.

James Curtis Sims, Jr., 64, pleaded guilty to Assault Causing Bodily Injury – Family Violence with a previous conviction. Because of his criminal history, his punishment was enhanced to a 25-year sentence.

Deputies were called on September 25, 2024, after the victim escaped the home and told authorities she feared for her life. According to the DA’s office, the woman had blood on her face and shirt, swelling under her left eye, and visible knots on her face and head. She told deputies that Sims accused her of stealing money and struck her "four or five times", threatening to kill her during the attack.

Sims was later located and arrested at his mother’s house.

This was not his first violent offense. According to the DA’s office, Sims:

  • Had two prior felony convictions (delivering cocaine in 1992 and robbery in 2003)

  • Had four prior misdemeanor assault convictions, all involving women.

Those prior convictions allowed prosecutors to pursue an enhanced punishment range — ultimately resulting in the 25-year sentence.

Wood County Criminal District Attorney Angela Albers praised the outcome and the deputies involved in the case.

“Domestic violence is a continuing stain on our society and I take domestic violence cases very seriously,” Albers said. “The defendant is a dangerous individual who clearly has no respect for women. Wood County is a much safer place with the defendant behind bars.”
