East End Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a $5,000 Health and Wellness Grant through VFIS of Texas, providing critical funding to support the long-term health and safety of its firefighters.

The grant will be used to purchase a washing extractor, an essential piece of equipment designed to properly clean firefighting gear and remove hazardous contaminants encountered during emergency responses. These substances—often invisible to the eye—can pose serious health risks to firefighters if not removed effectively.

Firefighters are routinely exposed to smoke, carcinogens, and other harmful materials while protecting their communities. The washing extractor will allow East End VFD to decontaminate turnout gear more thoroughly, helping reduce occupational exposure and protect personnel both on and off the fireground.

Grant funds are awarded through VFIS of Texas’ Health and Wellness Grant program, which supports volunteer fire departments across the state by investing in equipment and initiatives that improve firefighter safety, wellness, and operational readiness.

East End VFD expressed appreciation for the grant, noting that the equipment will have a lasting impact on the department’s ability to safeguard its members while continuing to serve the community.

Receipts for grant-funded purchases must be submitted by May 1, 2026, to qualify for reimbursement.
