Domestic Disturbance Escalates to Gunfire, Arrest Made in Deweyville

DEWEYVILLE, TX — A reported domestic disturbance escalated into gunfire Saturday afternoon, resulting in a felony arrest, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
On Saturday, January 3, 2026, at approximately 1:25 p.m., deputies with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a residence on County Road 3131 in Deweyville in reference to a disturbance. While deputies were en route, additional information was received indicating that a handgun had been discharged during the incident.
Upon arrival, deputies conducted an investigation and determined that Sonya Dworaczyk retrieved a handgun during the disturbance and physically assaulted her husband with the weapon. During the course of the assault, the firearm discharged and struck Dworaczyk in the arm.
Dworaczyk was treated at the scene by first responders and transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Following her release from the hospital, Dworaczyk was arrested by Newton County deputies and transported to the Newton County Jail. She has been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon – Family Violence, a first-degree felony.
Dworaczyk is innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The incident remains under investigation.
