Distracted teen driver sent to the hospital after crash

On Tuesday evening on FM 1013 West, near Cr 517, a teen driver became distracted by something within their vehicle, which led to a wreck.
The Department of Public Safety Media Sergeant Shana Clark said, "The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 6:27 p.m., a 2020 Honda Accord was traveling west. it is reported that the driver was distracted within the vehicle and traveled off the road to the right, where they struck a mailbox. The driver then overcorrected this maneuver back to the left and struck a tree on the south side of the roadway."
The driver, identified as a 16-year-old juvenile of Kirbyville, was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident. Upon arrival, rescuers found the driver shaken but uninjured. There was a potential for entrapment; however, extrication was not necessary.
The teen was then taken to the hospital by Allegiance Mobile Health - Jasper EMS.
The swift and coordinated response from all units contributed to a positive outcome in this incident.
