Deweyville Family Asks East Texas for Prayers After Child’s Devastating Diagnosis

DEWEYVILLE, Texas — A Newton County family is asking to lift them up in prayer after their 5-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare and terminal neurological disease following a sudden and frightening hospitalization.

Waylon Sterner, a Deweyville child known for his big personality and loving spirit, was recently admitted to the ICU after complications from the flu, bronchitis, and double ear infections. During his hospital stay, doctors discovered inflammation on his brain and began searching for the cause.

The diagnosis that followed changed everything.

Waylon was diagnosed with a rare genetic neurological disorder — a form of leukodystrophy — a progressive disease that attacks the brain and nervous system. The condition has already begun affecting basic functions, making speaking and movement increasingly difficult for the once energetic little boy. Doctors have confirmed the disease is terminal.

Waylon remains hospitalized and is expected to stay in the hospital for several more weeks as he undergoes intensive treatment and therapy, including speech, physical, and occupational therapy, aimed at helping him maintain strength and comfort.

His parents, Katelynne and Allen Sterner, have remained by his side throughout the ordeal and plan to continue doing so in the weeks ahead. Adding to the family’s strain, Katelynne lost her job on Christmas Eve when her employer permanently closed — just days before their son’s sudden medical crisis.

“No one could have predicted that the week after Christmas, our little family would be here,” the family shared.

A GoFundMe has been established to help cover medical expenses, therapy needs, travel costs, and basic living expenses as the family focuses entirely on Waylon’s care. While donations are appreciated, the family says prayers and community support mean just as much.

“More than money, they need a miracle,” loved ones said.

Those wishing to help are encouraged to donate or share the fundraiser and keep Waylon and his family in their thoughts and prayers as they navigate the difficult road ahead.
