JASPER COUNTY, Texas – On Sunday, August 24, 2025, at approximately 6:09 p.m., a Jasper County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop on County Road 257 for expired vehicle registration.
The driver, identified as Jeremy Kyle Smith, 32, of Pineland, had a passenger in the vehicle who was not wearing a seatbelt. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy observed a handgun in plain view between the driver’s seat and the center console. Both occupants appeared nervous, and admitted that drug paraphernalia was inside the vehicle.
The passenger handed over a magnetic box from beneath the dashboard that contained a small zip lock bag with a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine, several syringes with residue, and a debit card belonging to Smith. Smith admitted the items were his.
He was arrested and charged with:
Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 <1g (State Jail Felony)
Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon (Class A Misdemeanor) due to being engaged in criminal activity above a Class C Misdemeanor
The vehicle was released to the passenger, and Smith was transported to the Jasper County Jail.
Smith is considered innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Sheriff Chuck Havard and his staff remain committed to protecting Jasper County and working to keep drugs and illegal weapons off the streets.
