JASPER COUNTY — A tense situation unfolded late Sunday morning in north Jasper County when a man walked into the Sheriff’s Office claiming he had been involved in a shooting at his residence.
According to Sheriff Chuck Havard, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on October 5. A Jasper County Patrol Sergeant was notified that a man in the lobby reported someone had been shot at his home on FM 252. Sergeant Cody Christopher quickly responded to the office and made contact with the individual.
While a Jasper Police Department officer stayed with the man at the Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Christopher headed to the residence to investigate. Upon arrival, he discovered that more than 25 rounds had been fired inside the home — but there were no signs of injuries or any deceased individuals.
Jasper County Patrol and CID investigators, assisted by a JPD officer, conducted a thorough search of the home and surrounding property. After confirming that no one had been harmed, investigators secured all firearms from the residence for safekeeping.
Sgt. Christopher later returned to the office and transported the man to Jasper Memorial Hospital, where an emergency detention order was obtained to allow for a mental health evaluation.
“I would like to commend our staff and the officers with the Jasper Police Department for a job well done,” Sheriff Havard said.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released the man’s name, and the case remains under review.
