ANGELINA NATIONAL FOREST, TX — The Cypress Creek Wilderness Fire burning within the Upland Island Wilderness Area of the Angelina National Forest is now estimated at approximately 6,103 acres, according to an update released February 27, 2026, by the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas.
The fire is located in the southern portion of the wilderness area. Crews continue active suppression efforts, focusing on strengthening containment and reducing remaining fuels within the established perimeter.
Following successful backburn operations earlier this week, firefighters are now conducting mop-up operations and igniting remaining interior pockets of unburned vegetation. These planned burns are designed to remove available fuel and reduce the potential for future flare-ups inside the containment lines.
Residents and visitors can expect to see visible smoke columns throughout the day as these operations continue.
Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling:
East along State Highway 63
South along State Highway 69 from Zavalla
Smoke may significantly reduce visibility, particularly during early morning and evening hours.
Officials emphasize that public and firefighter safety remain the highest priorities. Additional updates will be released as conditions evolve.
