Despite recent showers, conditions remain dangerously dry — and one illegal burn just scorched 12 acres.

Tyler County officials are warning residents that the burn ban is still in full effect across Newton, Tyler, and Jasper counties. Emergency crews were called out Sunday after a fire in the Spurger area grew out of control when someone tried to burn trash during the ongoing dry spell.

According to Tyler County Emergency Management, Spurger Volunteer Fire Department, Ivanhoe VFD, and the Texas A&M Forest Service all responded to the blaze, which burned roughly 12 acres before it was contained.

Officials emphasized that the recent light rainfall wasn’t nearly enough to lift the burn ban or ease fire danger.
“We are still under a burn ban,” the statement read. “We did not get enough rain to help end the dry conditions. Do not burn outdoors!”

Residents are urged to refrain from burning trash, brush, or debris of any kind until bans are lifted in their respective counties. Local law enforcement may issue citations for violations.
