At 2:45 pm. Thursday afternoon, Newton Volunteer Fire Dept received a call to assist Burkeville VFD on a woods fire off Hwy 87 N near CR 2038. The Texas Forest Service was also called out to help get things under control.
Once units arrived at the location, they saw that there were four structures in danger. The departments battled the blaze for around 3 hours and had it contained by 5:30 pm.
Newton VFD Captain Melanie Smith said that the cause of the fire is unknown but it is thought to have started from an unattended fire behind the home and shed. All we're unoccupied.
High winds contributed to the spread of the fire, but in the end, no structures were lost during the course of this blaze.
