BUNA, Texas — A Buna man was arrested Monday night after Jasper County deputies located a handgun concealed inside a residence during a disturbance call, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.
On January 5, 2026, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Deputy Harrell was dispatched to County Road 740 in Buna in reference to a verbal disturbance. Upon arrival, the deputy observed Richard Johnson, 58, standing next to a vehicle on the roadway.
Authorities reported that Johnson immediately walked into his yard and toward the back door of the residence but was unable to gain entry.
Following an investigation, Deputy Harrell discovered a black Bersa handgun hidden inside a couch cushion near where Johnson had been standing. Johnson reportedly told deputies that he placed the firearm there as a sign of respect toward the deputy and stated the gun was unloaded.
Investigators determined Johnson is a convicted felon currently on felony parole and is prohibited from possessing firearms at any time.
Johnson was transported to the Jasper County Jail and charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a third-degree felony.
He is innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
Sheriff Chuck Havard and his office remain committed to combating criminal activity throughout Jasper County.
