BUNA, Texas — A Buna man is facing multiple charges after attempting to flee from Jasper County deputies Sunday afternoon.
According to Sheriff Chuck Havard, Sgt. Chris Wade responded to County Road 740 in Buna on September 28, 2025, for a disturbance involving a firearm. While Sgt. Wade was briefing Deputy Spivey on the scene, the suspect — identified as Richard Johnson, 57, of Buna — was spotted riding his bicycle near the intersection of CR 740 and Lynwood Drive.
When Johnson noticed patrol units, he attempted to evade deputies on his bicycle before abandoning it and running behind a mobile home. Deputies pursued him on foot and quickly took him into custody.
Authorities say Johnson was found with approximately 1.5 grams of methamphetamine and a BB gun tucked in his waistband that resembled a small-caliber revolver. He was transported to the Jasper County Jail and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Third-Degree Felony) and Evading Arrest with a Previous Conviction (State Jail Felony). Sheriff Havard noted that an additional charge related to the weapon may be forthcoming, pending further investigation.
Sheriff Havard reminded residents that Johnson, like all individuals arrested, is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
“Sheriff Havard and his staff remain committed to combating criminal activity in Jasper County,” the department said in a release.
