JASPER COUNTY — A Buna man has been arrested after Jasper County deputies responded to a report of a five-year-old elementary student showing injuries believed to be the result of abuse.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Buna Elementary School on November 6, 2025, after staff observed injuries on a student and reported their concerns. Investigators responded and confirmed the injuries were consistent with physical abuse, according to Sheriff Chuck Havard.

During the investigation, deputies interviewed the child’s father, Chevy Wayne Luquette, 30, of Buna.

A warrant was issued the same evening, and Luquette was arrested for:

  • Injury to a Child — Reckless Bodily Injury (State Jail Felony).

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office reports that Child Protective Services was present during the investigation and took necessary measures to ensure the child’s safety.

Sheriff Havard expressed appreciation for the school’s prompt response.

“We appreciate Dr. Motomura and her staff at Buna ISD for their awareness and vigilance in protecting our students,” Havard said, adding that his office remains committed to combating criminal activity and protecting children in Jasper County.

Luquette is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
