KIRBYVILLE, Texas — Nearly three years after a burglary left a Kirbyville home ransacked and its 90-year-old owner shaken, DNA evidence has finally delivered answers — and suspects are now in custody.
On October 25, 2022, Jasper County deputies were called to the home on County Road 509, where they found the front door kicked in, rooms overturned, and copper stripped from the air conditioning unit. Several personal belongings had also been stolen.
“It was devastating for her,” investigators recalled of the then-87-year-old homeowner. Deputies collected DNA at the scene, sending it for testing with no idea it would take nearly three years for results to return.
That patience paid off. In July 2025, Investigator Karli Cherry was notified of CODIS “hits” identifying three possible suspects. Working with the Texas Rangers, DNA comparisons confirmed matches to:
Jeramia Castleberry, 40, of Jasper
Charles Chaneyworth, 62, of Frankston
Donald Parrish, 52, of Kirbyville
Warrants were issued for all three on charges of Burglary of a Habitation (2nd Degree Felony) and Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity (1st Degree Felony).
On September 30, 2025, JCSO arrested Donald Parrish at his Kirbyville residence. Two days later, with help from Texas Pardons and Parole and the Athens Police Department, Chaneyworth was also taken into custody. Castleberry remains in state prison on unrelated Jasper County convictions for Arson and Evading Arrest with a Vehicle. He will be returned to face the burglary charges once his current seven-year sentence is complete.
For the victim, now 90 years old, the arrests mark a long-awaited moment of closure. She thanked the sheriff’s office personally for not giving up on her case.
“These individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law,” Sheriff Chuck Havard said. “But this case shows the dedication of our investigators, past and present. I want to thank my team, the Texas Rangers, and also retired Sheriff Mitchel Newman and his investigators for their work in keeping this case alive. We remain committed to protecting the citizens of Jasper County and seeing justice served.”
