Tyler County Declares Local State of Disaster Ahead of Severe Winter Weather

WOODVILLE, Texas — Jan. 23, 2026

Tyler County officials have issued a local state of disaster declaration in response to an imminent threat of severe winter weather expected to impact the county and the broader Southeast Texas region.

According to the declaration signed Jan. 23 by Tyler County Judge Milton Powers, forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate the approaching winter system could bring prolonged below-freezing temperatures, significant wintry precipitation, high winds, and hazardous travel conditions. County officials warned that the storm has the potential to cause widespread damage to trees, power lines, roadways, and structures.

The declaration states that major infrastructure impacts could limit or prevent safe passage on roadways and increase the risk of long-term power and utility outages countywide, creating a public safety hazard for residents, businesses, and agricultural operations.

Based on weather forecasts and local media reports, the county judge determined that extraordinary measures are necessary to protect life and property and to support emergency response efforts.

Under the declaration:

  • A local state of disaster for a public health emergency is declared pursuant to Section 418.108(a) of the Texas Government Code.

  • The declaration remains in effect for up to seven days unless extended or renewed by the Tyler County Commissioners Court.

  • The declaration is to be given prompt public notice and filed with the Tyler County Clerk.

  • The Tyler County Emergency Management Plan is activated immediately.

  • The declaration takes effect immediately upon issuance.

The declaration was officially ordered on Jan. 23, 2026, and filed with the Tyler County Clerk’s Office.

County officials are urging residents to stay informed of weather updates, limit travel during hazardous conditions, and take appropriate precautions to protect people, property, livestock, and critical infrastructure as the winter weather system moves through the area.
