Stepping Into the Past: Jasper County to Host First-Ever History Expo on July 11

The Jasper County Historical Commission is bringing East Texas history to life this summer with the First Annual History Expo, a new community event taking place on Friday, July 11, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jasper County Courthouse Annex, located at 271 East Lamar in Jasper.

With free admission, this all-day event invites residents of all ages to explore the rich heritage of Deep East Texas through a wide variety of exhibits, breakout sessions, and hands-on displays from across the region. More than two dozen exhibitors, demonstrators, and historians are slated to participate, showcasing everything from antique firearms and genealogy to folk medicine, spinning, canning, and more.

“This is a new event for our area, and we’re thrilled to have so many local and regional exhibitors coming together to share their knowledge,” said Judy Bean, a coordinator for the event and representative of the Jasper County Historical Commission. “It’s not just about history—it’s about connecting with our roots and learning the stories that shaped our communities.”

Kirbyville will be proudly represented by Steve Moody and his Cowhide Rockers, along with a display from the Calaboose Museum, sponsored by the Kirbyville Area Heritage Society and JCHC. Leather tooling craftsman Jeff Greer may also join the lineup, adding to the hands-on demonstrations.

Visitors can expect engaging exhibits and live demonstrations from contributors such as:

  • Bevil’s Rangers with historical reenactments, blacksmithing, and firearms.

  • Laughing Duck Farm with herbal teas and natural remedies.

  • Newton County Historical Commission, highlighting genealogy and local preservation.

  • Broussard Farms, showing how goat milk is turned into skin care products.

  • Bake It Happen, offering sweet treats from its cupcake and cookie cart.

  • Eva’s Country Kitchen, showcasing home canning methods.

Other unique exhibits include fur and skull displays, cemetery mapping, tallow skin care demonstrations, and old photo scanning services from JCHC members.

This isn't your average expo. The History Expo is designed to be interactive, family-friendly, and deeply rooted in East Texas traditions. Whether you're interested in historical maps, pine needle weaving, surveying, old baseball teams, or preserving your family’s legacy, there’s something for everyone.

Exhibitors may have products available for purchase, and payment methods will vary by vendor.
