Ronald "Ron" Larry Read Obituary

A Celebration of Ronald “Ron” Larry Read’s Life, age 77, of Brookeland, Texas, will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial following at Townsend Cemetery near Broaddus, TX. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church.

Ron passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin, Texas surrounded by his loving family.

Born on January 15, 1947 to Chester (Sam) and Nellie Read in Camp Seale, TX, he was a lifelong resident of Brookeland, TX and the Jasper area. He was a 1965 graduate of Brookeland High School and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. 

On March 5, 1966 he married the love of his life, Linda Powell, at Mill Creek Church in Brookeland. He served in the United States Army. He was the owner/operator of Read’s Grocery and Bait Store for many years, a former manager at Gibson’s Sporting Goods and he retired from TDCJ after 20 years.  

Ron is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda Read of Brookeland, TX; daughters, Kimberly Simmons and husband Tim of Huntsville, TX and Leigh Sargent and husband Chad of St. Charles, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Ashlea Doss and husband Kenny, Stephen Simmons and wife Katie, Jacob Woods, Hunter Woods and wife Elaine, Bryan Read and wife Julia, Kimberlin Sargent and Kace Sargent; and six great-grandchildren, Kason Doss, Allison Doss, Jackson Doss, Camryn Simmons, Charlotte Woods and Ruth Woods. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester (Sam) and Nellie Read and son, Larry Read.
