A Newton County man has been acquitted of murder, but has been sentenced for Tampering with a Corpse.

John Michael (Toby) Peck of Newton was initially charged with the November 24, 2017 death of Randy Holmes. Prosecutors said that Peck shot Holmes, ran over him with a tractor, and then set his body on fire.

His body wasn't found until 2019.

On Friday a Newton County jury acquitted Peck of murder, but found him guilty of Tampering with a Corpse and handed down the maximum sentence of 20 years.
