The Newton County Tax Assessor Collector’s Office made an over payment to Deweyville Independent School District earlier this year in the amount of $68,000.
According to County Judge Ronnie Cochran the money paid out was the result of an overlap in payments performed by two individuals working for the Tax Assessor Collector’s Office in the first quarter of 2025. Cochran said, “The Assessor Collector’s Office could not close out the month of July due to the error. The County Auditor’s Office was brought into the situation and found where and how the errors were made.” Cochran described it saying, “On January 31st one employee sent a payment to Deweyville ISD that was for January 20th – 26th which was the correct amount they were supposed to receive. Then on February 12th one of the other ladies paid Deweyville ISD January 20th-31st overlapping the initial payment made to the ISD by 6 days.”
Cochran stated, “I went to the Deweyville School Board meeting and was this also happened in 2023. The school found the error and contacted the County Tax Assessor-Collector to return the money.”
Deweyville ISD School Board met in a special called board meeting on October 1st where one of the action items was as follows:
2.B.1. Discuss and take possible action to approve repayment to Newton County for tax overpayment
Deweyville ISD School Board voted to return the overpayment to Newton County.
Cochran stated that the County Auditor’s Office checks the Tax Assessor-Collector monthly report but has started a daily review process of the Tax Assessor-Collector’s report.
